I answer in the order things arrive. Mühlewerk is a small product looked after by one person, so I cannot promise a response time.

Common questions

Which rules does Mühlewerk play by?

Classic nine men's morris: nine pieces each, a placing phase, a moving phase, and flying once a side is down to three pieces. A closed mill takes an opposing piece — pieces inside an opposing mill are protected while that opponent still has pieces outside one. A player who falls below three pieces or can no longer move has lost. It is a draw on the third repetition of a position, or after 50 half-moves without a capture.

Do I need an account?

No. Mühlewerk has no sign-in of its own and no servers of its own. Apple's Game Center is used only for online games, leaderboards and achievements, and even that is optional.

Online: no opponent is found.

Matchmaking runs through Game Center. Check that you are signed in to Game Center in the system settings and that multiplayer games are allowed — Screen Time can restrict this. If nobody happens to be searching, an invitation to a friend is the way through.

The connection dropped during an online game.

The game is kept as one that ended without an opponent. It deliberately does not count as a win and does not affect the rating: losing a connection should neither win nor lose a game.

What does the rating in the profile mean?

A number worked out on your device from your online games. It is not an official, tamper-proof ranking, and the app says so. The opponent's strength is not transmitted; every opponent is counted at the starting rating.

The computer plays too strongly or too weakly.

There are three levels — easy, medium and hard. The level is chosen before each game against the computer.

Can I watch a game again?

Yes. Every finished game is in the history and can be replayed there move by move. Delete a game and it also leaves the statistics, the rating and the achievements — the history is the only source of those numbers.

Turning off sound and vibration

In the app's settings. Each can be turned off separately; Mühlewerk also follows the silent switch and Reduce Motion.

Accessibility

Mühlewerk is built for VoiceOver: each of the 24 points has a spoken name, and the state of the game is read out as a sentence rather than a row of numbers. Text follows Dynamic Type through the accessibility sizes, and no piece is distinguished by colour alone.

System requirements

An iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. Online games additionally need a Game Center account and an internet connection.

Reporting a problem

What helps: your device, your iOS version, the version of Mühlewerk (at the bottom of the app's settings), what you did and what happened instead. A screenshot often says more than a description.
